Finishes

Finished building a project??
Well not untill you’ve applied a finish. Raw wood can sometimes be appropriate, for instance the inside of a drawer, leaving no smell.
But when it is so really easy to put down a good finish, with the stunning results that can be achieved, completely changing the project from great craftmanship to a beautiful, valuable, heirloom piece, that will last and age gracefully, the extra time is when it all comes to completion.
However, the three practical reasons to apply a finish to your project: protection and appearance and contrast.
Protection. Wood is a porous material, capable of soaking in anything that gets on it, and it needs to be sealed
Appearance. Because what we work with has a grain, some woods can be incredibly vibrant. Finishes add highlight, color, depth, and warmth.
Contrast. Some timbers we use are for structure but are not particularly attractive, the best way to improve the design is to add color and contrast, paint can really add a dash to a project.
