Work Bench
You will need a 1/2 inch socket wrench for assembly.
Place the trestle assembly where you want the bench. The rounded ends of the horizontal members are the front of the trestle.
Insert the tenon on the stretcher ends into the mortise in the trestle end (it is easier to do one side of the trestle first). The long bolt goes through the leg and threads into the square nut that’s installed in the stretcher. Do not tighten until all four bolts are in place. Once all four bolts are in place snug them up, but not over-tighten.
Place the bench top on top of the trestle, inserting the wooden bullets into the holes in the blocking on the underside of the bench. Secure the top to the trestle with the lag bolts. It is not necessary to tighten the lag bolts very tightly.
Eight-foot benches are shipped with the tail vice screw disassembled. To reassemble, you will need a large, flat screwdriver. Screw the acme threaded rod into the tail vise until the flange is flush, making sure that the oil hole in the middle of the flange is on top. Screw the flange to the tail vise with the two large screws provided.
Vise handles: unthread one knob, insert the handle into the vice handle, and screw the knob back on, making sure the rubber O-ring is between the knob and the vise hardware.
Maintenance: once or twice a year, oil the bench with a 50/50 mixture of boiled linseed oil and turpentine, applied liberally. Occasionally oil the screws and guide-rods on the hardware with a light machine oil.
Once a year or so, depending upon the local humidity changes in your workshop, you will need to flatten the bench top with the largest jointer plane available. Make sure the blade is very sharp and set to take a fine shaving. Make diagonal cuts from one side, then the other, checking frequently with an accurate straight-edge and finish by taking very fine sets of shavings length-wise. Re-oil the bench after flattening.
