Improved Chipbreakers
A big part of a chipbreaker's function is to dampen vibration, but chipbreakers on metal bench planes are usually quite thin. Traditional wooden planes, infill planes and Japanese planes typically have much thicker chipbreakers (as well as thicker blades).
Our new chipbreakers are made of High Carbon Tool Steel and are 1/8" thick with a .015" lip ground at a 1 degree angle to provide excellent contact between the leading edge of the chipbreaker and the blade. Very solid. Supplied with the chipbreaker screw.
Lie-Nielsen chipbreakers
are designed specifically for our tools. It is possible that they may
fit some original Stanley or Record planes, but critical dimensions of these and other maker's tools varied over the years.
If you would like to order a custom replacement chipbreaker, select the appropriate size in the order form and note measurement 'A' (see below) in the order comment section.
The 'A' measurement of our 2" Standard Improved Chipbreaker is 3.525". The 'A' measurement of our 2-3/8" Standard Improved Chipbreaker is 3.820". If your original Stanley Chipbreaker is within .010", you can order the less expensive alternative.
We prefer
measurements in thousandths of an inch. Second best is metric, (no
fractions, please). We cannot take your dimensions over the phone.
Custom ordered chipbreakers are non-refundable.
